To the book
Maria Pobers 2023 published book Redefining the Hypernym Mensch:in in German. Gender, Sexuality, and Personhood examines the linguisticization and lexicalization of umbrella terms such as “the human being”, “the person” and “the being” and their synonyms.
They are generally considered gender inclusive, i.e. for all human beings - even in feminist linguistics and gender linguistics. Whether that is really the case, is subjected to critical examination from both a grammatical and semantic perspective.
In the tension between traditional rules and progressive language use, this book analyzes the masculine heteronormativity of umbrella terms and advocates for the introduction of gender-inclusive lexicalization and language practice.
